NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College basketball team used a third-quarter surge to run away with a 79-60 win over Clark University Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference basketball tilt in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
The Pioneers remain unbeaten in league action at 3-0 and improves to 12-1 overall.
How it Happened
- The Pioneers came out hot, jumping to a 19-2 lead out of the gate thanks to seven early points from Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire)
- Clark answered with a 7-0 run and would make the score 23-9 entering the second period
- A three-pointer from Emma Levesque got the Cougars within 10 with under a minute to go but Smith took a 36-23 advantage at intermission
- Smith put the game on ice with a 27-point third quarter that included a buzzer beating three-pointer by Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) to lead 63-38 with one period remaining
Inside the Numbers
- Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire) registered her fourth double-double of the season as she posted a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds
- Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, Calif./Serra)Â finished with six assists and six steals
- Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and Cassidy Creager (Fairview, PA/Villa Maria Academy)Â each contributed eight points off the bench
- Smith ended the night with advantages in rebounds (44-27), points in the paint (48-28) and bench points (42-28)
- The Pioneers shot 45.1 percent (32-of-71) from the field
