NORTON - The Smith College field hockey team delivered a memorable 2-1 win over Wheaton College in a penalty shootout at Nordin Field on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Lyons fall to 2-8 and 0-2.
Highlights
- Smith took the lead early when first year Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford)Â netted one on a breakaway just 4:15 into the first quarter
- The Lyons tied the game when Sophie Shekarchi scored her fifth goal of the season off a rebounded save with less than two minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter to tie the game 1-1
- After two scoreless overtimes periods, the game would be decided by a penalty shootout
- Juniors Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) and Laura Dreher (Durham, N.H./Durham) each scored for Smith in penalty strokes to give them the winning margin
- Lydia Gaudreau netted one for the Lyons to cut the deficit to 2-1.Â

- Goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn./Radnor) made six saves in the win
