Smith Grinds Out 67-60 Win at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN - A 13-5 run in the fourth quarter powered Smith College to a 67-60 victory over Williams College in non-conference basketball action on Wednesday evening. 

Smith, who is ranked No. 11 in the D3hoops.com national poll, moves to 7-1 on the year. Williams drops to 5-4. 

Game Highlights
  • A layup by Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) gave Smith a 10-7 edge with 4:31 left in the first quarter. However, a bucket by Maddy Mandyck led to a 9-4 run by the Ephs and a 19-14 lead at the end of the frame
  • In the opening quarter, Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) shot 3-of-4 from the field with six points
  • After both teams exchanged free throws, an Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) three moved the score to 21-19 at the 6:34 mark
  • The Pioneers continued to chip away and a pair of good free throws from Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire) put Smith ahead 29-27 at the break
  • Smith controlled the action in the third quarter as they outscored Williams, 16-13, which resulted in a 45-40 advantage
  • Clairmont's trey with 3:02 gave Smith its largest lead of the game, 61-50, as the Pioneers held on in the final minutes for the 67-60 final

Inside the Numbers
  • Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire) led Smith with a season-high 19 points and 15 rebounds and is just two shy of 1,000 career points 
  • Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) totaled 16 points, eight boards, four assists and three steals while Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) finished with 14 points and eight rebounds
  • The Pioneers had the upper hand in rebounds (50-29), points in the paint (34-18) and bench points (14-10)
  • Smith shot 44.1% (26-of-59) from the field, 27.3% (3-of-11) from behind the arc, and 63.2% (12-of-19) from the free-throw line
  • Williams shot 35.9% (23-of-64) from the floor, 35.7% (5-of-14) from three-point range and 64.3% (9-of-14) at the charity stripe

Up Next
Smith will wrap up the first semester with a road contest at Brooklyn College Saturday, December 10 at 2:00pm. The game is a rematch of last year's second round NCAA Tournament game.
