Lacrosse Tops Wentworth, 18-11

BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomores Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Tatum Galuski (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) combined to score 10 goals as the Smith College lacrosse team defeated Wentworth, 18-11, in non-conference action Wednesday evening. Smith moves to 2-1 on the year, while the Leopards start the season 0-3.

  • Arancio and Galuski each scored five goals for the Pioneers
  • First year Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) totaled three goals and five assists
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) made 11 saves

How it Happened
  • Galuski scored two of Smith's first three goals , sandwiched around Wentworth;s tally.
  • The Pioneers upped their lead to 4-1 before the Leopards closed the gap with a goal with 2:05 left. Arancio made it 5-2 Smith after one quarter when she scored with 1:14 left.
  • A 4-0 run with two coming off the stick of Arancio put Smith in front 9-3 and a goal with seven seconds left from junior Reese Gittleman put the Pioneers ahead, 10-5, at the break.
  • Arancio scored 1:55 into the third quarter to extend the lead to 11-5. Wentworth answered, scoring 21 seconds apart to make it 11-7 with 12:28 left as the teams traded goals for the remainder of the half 
  • In the final period, Smith outscored the Black & Gold 5-2

The Pioneers return home and will host Western New England University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
