Softball Beats WPI 4-3 to Earn NEWMAC DH Split

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team dropped game one against WPI but rebounded with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in game two in a New England Women's and Men's Athletc Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader Friday afternoon. Smith moves to 10-17 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while the Engineers are now 21-13, 7-5 NEWMAC.

Game 1: Smith 3 WPI 4
  • Trailing 1-0 in the second, Juno Schantz scored on a groundout by Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) and Smith took the lead when Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) scored from third on a pop fly caught in foul territory by the lef fielder
  • The Engineers added two runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead but the Pioneers were unable to capitalize with the bases loaded in the sixth
  • Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) scored in the seventh to make it a 4-3 final
  • Eryn Lee (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) and Juno Schantz each recorded two hits for the Pioneers
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits

Game 2: Smith 4 WPI 3
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) scored a run in the first and knocked in an RBI single in the second
  • WPI tied things in the third and went ahead in the sixth on Jocelyn Diaz's RBI single to center
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Taketa drove in the winning runs on a triple scoring Emma August Aldenberg and Meredith Moore (Caro, Mich./Caro)
  • Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) earned win in the circle for Smith, while Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) recorded the save
  • Taketa finished with three RBI on two hits
