Softball Splits Doubleheader at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Smith College softball team split with Trinity College in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers earned a 6-4 victory in game one before the hosts took down the Pioneers, 9-1. Smith moves to 11-20 on the year.

Game 1: Smith 6 Trinity 4
  • Smith got on the board in the first when Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) scored on an error by the Trinity defense
  • The game would remain scoreless until the fifth inning when Molly Taketa's (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) triple brought home Meredith Moore (Caro, Mich./Caro)
  • The Pioneers added three more runs to take a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth
  • Trinity put up four runs in the sixth but Smith secured the win on Osmond's single to right in the seventh
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) got the win going 5.1 innings with four strikeouts

Game 2: Smith 1 Trinity 9 (6 innings)
  • The Pioneers only run of the game came in the first inning when Juno Schantz drove in Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) on an RBI single to right
  • The Bantams tied the game in the bottom of the first and recorded 10 hits en route to the 9-1 final
  • Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on eight hits
  • Schantz collected two hits, while Kaitlin Beals and Meredith Moore (Caro, Mich./Caro) each added one
