CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Smith College lacrosse team dropped an 18-7 decision to MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers move to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers improve to 6-4, 3-1 NEWMAC).

Top Performers

• Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) registered a hat-trick while Jennia Arancio generated two goals, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers
• Stella Alphas (Weston, Mass./Weston) generated two goals, one assist, 10 draw controls, and two caused turnovers for the Pioneers.
• Bella DeAngelo (Portsmouth, RI/Moses Brown School) bolstered Smith's defense with three groundballs.
• In net, Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) collected seven saves, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers.

How it Happened
MIT gradually built a 4-0 lead in the first quarter as four different players found the back of the net. Smith ended the shutout with 35 seconds left in the quarter later courtesy of a solo effort by Alphas.
 
The Engineers' balanced scoring continued in the second stanza as five players each contributed a goal, giving MIT a 9-1 halftime lead.
 
A solo effort from Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) ended the Pioneers' scoring drought 2:18 into the third quarter while a free-position shot by Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) made the score 9-3 at the 6:35 mark. MIT generated three quick goals and Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) capped the quarter with an unassisted marker with 46 seconds remaining.
 
After a back-and-forth start to the fourth quarter, a goal by Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) narrowed the gap to 14-7 with 10:45 left to play. The Engineers replied with four straight goals to close out the game.
