Guimond's Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey to 3-2 Win Over Westfield State

NORTHAMPTON - Behind a hat trick from sophomore Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy), the Smith College field hockey team capped the opening game of the Caryl Newhof Classic with a 3-2 win against Westfield State Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers even out to 1-1 on the year, while the Owls begin the season 0-1.

How it Happened
  • The Pioneers got things going minutes into the second quarter as Guimond pushed home her first of the day, capitalizing on a corner. Guimond took the ball at the top of the circle and put it away in the 19th minute
  • Opening the fresh half, O'Meara took a shot from just inside the arc, which was then topped home by Guimond in front of the goal post
  • Just minutes later, Guimond controlled a loose ball at the stroke mark and sent it home for the hat trick
  • The Owls continued to pressure the Smith defense and scored two unanswered goals to make it 3-2

  • Smith has won six straight against the Owls and improves to 14-11 all time
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn./Radnor) made 10 saves in the win
  • Smith held a 22-15 advantage in shots and 9-6 edge in corners

Up Next
The Pioneers will face Nichols College in the championship game of the Caryl Newhof Classic Sunday at 1:00pm. The consolation game will feature Westfield State vs UMaine Farmington at 10:30am.
