No. 5 Smith Cruises Past Mount Holyoke, 85-24

SOUTH HADLEY - 11 different players scored as the Smith College basketball team cruised to an 85-24 NEWMAC win over Mount Holyoke College Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers, who are ranked No. 5 in the latest D3hoops.com and WBCA Top 25 Poll, improve to 18-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference and have won 12 straight. 

Game Highlights
  • The Smith defense allowed a season-low 24 points while holding the Lyons to 16.4% shooting from the floor 
  • The Pioneers shot 52.2% (36-of-69) from the field, 35.5% (11-of-31) from three-point range, and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line
  • Smith opened the game on a 6-0 run before closing the quarter on an 11-0 spurt to hold a 28-6 lead after the first and used a balanced scoring effort in the second to go up 39-12 at the half
  • Smith turned the game into a rout in the third period, outscoring Mount Holyoke 24-2 to lead 63-14 entering the fourth quarter 
  • Ashlyn Bohn (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson High Magnet School) and Breona Martin (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary School) each scored five points in the fourth for the 85-24 final

By the Numbers
  • Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored a game-high 15 points with five rebounds
  • First-year Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) posted a career-high nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from beyond-the-arc, while Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds
  • Ashlyn Bohn (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson High Magnet School) made her first start of the year and finished with a season-best 12 points and six boards
  • Ellie Potvin (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) added six points and five assists in 24 minutes of action
