Box Score NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College basketball team dominated the third quarter en route to a 64-50 win against No. 15 Springfield College Saturday afternoon in Ainsworth Gymnasium. The Pioneers, ranked No. 8 in the latest D3Hoops.com national poll, improve to 12-1 while the Pride fall to 10-4 in a game that did not count in the conference standings.
Game Highlights
- A pair of free throws by Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) gave Smith an 11-5 edge with 3:45 to go in the first as the Pioneers took advantage of five turnovers from the visitors
- Morgan Morrison's (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) layup with under a minute to go allowed the Pioneers to take a 15-10 lead into the second period
- A three-pointer by Yamada put Smith up 25-22 but Springfield responded as the two teams would head into halftime tied at 25
- The Pioneers took complete command with a dominant third quarter performance, outscoring Springfield 20-6 as Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) knocked down three treys
- Smith's lead grew to as many as 19 early in the fourth but the Pride continued to chip away and climbed to within six, 56-50, before Clairmont's three-pointer with 1:05 on the clock sealed the win
Inside the Numbers
- Morrison continued her outstanding play, scoring 21 points with 15 rebounds
- Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) provided a spark off the bench, draining six from 3-point range to finish with 18 points
- Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) dished out a game-high nine assists
- The Pioneers shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the floor, a season-best 45.0% (9-of-20) from behind the arc, and 64.7% (11-of-17) from the free throw line
- Springfield shot 29.6% (16-of-54) from the field, 20.0% from three-point range and 77.8% (14-of-18) from the free throw line
- Smith outrebounded the Pride 38-29
