Tennis Delivers 9-0 Sweep in Conference Opener Against Clark

October 03, 2023

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Smith College tennis team registered their third-straight 9-0 sweep against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Clark in their conference opener on Tuesday evening. Their four first years picked up their first conference victory for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers open their fall season 1-0 and 1-0 in conference play while the Cougars drop to 2-3 and 0-1.

The first point of the day came in the No. 3 doubles position. Sophomore Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) with first-year Sophia Dube () played aggressive doubles. They quickly pushed their opponents into a defensive position. The pair communicated well and took their opportunities up at net to get the quick 9-0 win.

First-year team of Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) earned the second point of the day for Smith. The pair came out strong, dictating from the very first shot in every point. Hauser moved the ball around with ease from the baseline, and Jung used her effective serve to let her partner easily end points at the net. The first-year duo didn't drop a game in their opening match to get the 9-0 win.

The junior pair of Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) returned to the No. 1 doubles position. The team was coming off a great run at the ITA Regional Tournament in September. The duo played lights out doubles, not giving an inch to the Clark team to go up 9-0 and securing the doubles sweep for Smith.

The fourth point of the day came in the No. 6 position where first-year Sabrina Wang () stepped up in her first match for Smith. She used her serve and big forehand to play aggressive singles to earn herself the 6-0, 6-0 win.

The match was clinched in the No. 4 position where first-year Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) got her second win of the day, going 2-0 to start her Smith career. Jung played solid tennis from the baseline, moving her opponent all over the court on her way to her 6-0, 6-1 win.

Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) opened her senior season with a win in the No. 5 position. Gibson played smart, aggressive tennis, looking to take advantage right away off the serve and the return. Gibson closed the match without dropping a game giving her team their sixth point of the day.

Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 position in her first singles match of the fall. C. Goshgarian used variety to disrupt her opponent making it impossible to know what was going to happen next. C. Goshgarian's win gave Smith their seventh point of the day.

First-year, Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) took on the No. 1 position in her first dual match for Smith after a great showing at the ITA Regional Tournament earlier this fall. She played clean tennis from the baseline. On her service games, Hauser kept her opponent off balance making it impossible for Hannah Russo of Clark to find a way to break serve. Hauser closed the match 6-0, 6-2.

The final point of the day, giving Smith the clean sweep, came in the No. 2 position with Lili Gosgharian's win over Maeve McEnroe. L. Goshgarian displayed her strong combination of ball movement and patience to out work her opponent on her way to a 6-2, 6-1 win.
