Tennis Shines in Day Two of NEWITT

October 07, 2023

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Smith College tennis team continued to bring strong performances to the second day of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Saturday.

D Draw highlights
Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) continued their momentum from day one going into day two. In their semifinal match, Gibson and Wang took on Brennan and Mederick of Springfield. Starting with doubles, Gibson and Wang showed their strengths at the net and at the baseline to take the match 8-4, giving them the lead going into singles. In singles, the pair only dropped three games between them to secure their spot in the D Draw final. Gibson earned the 8-1 win over Brennan and Wang captured the 8-2 victory over Mederick.

In the final, Gibson and Wang took on a tough team from Wellesley. Starting with doubles, Gibson and Wang played aggressive doubles to disrupt the Wellesley team. The pair was able to force a set tie-break, but Wellesley was able to close out the match 7-2 in the breaker. Going into singles play, Wang and Gibson were unable to hold off the duo from Wellesley. In their first tournament as a pair and Wang's college tournament debut, the pair had a great weekend becoming finalists in their draw.

C Draw Highlights
Sophia Dube (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) and Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) kicked off play for Smith on day two of NEWITTs. In their quarterfinal match, they were facing Kriti Sarav and Lily Cade of Wellesley. To start the match, Dube and Caluna played a close match in doubles. The pair adjusted well to force the match to a set tie-break. Wellesley was able to squeeze out the tie-break 7-3 to secure the doubles point. In singles, the Wellesley duo carried their momentum making it challenging for Dube and Caluna to disrupt play.

B Draw Highlights
Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) got off to a great start in their quarterfinal against Nikki Kintiroglou and Steffy Julian of Tufts. Starting with singles, both L. Goshgarian and C. Goshgarian were able to outpower and outlast their opponents from the baseline.  The pair secured twin scores, both winning their singles 8-3, 8-3 and securing their advancement to the semifinal round. The team still got to play out their doubles point, where they highlighted their cohesion and aggressiveness as a doubles team. The two played lights out tennis up at net, winning their doubles 8-5 and going undefeated en route to the semifinal.

On the other side of the B Draw, the first-year duo of Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) and Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) took on Ella Baker and Alli Francis of Trinity. Starting with doubles, Baker and Francis quickly jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead. Jung and Hauser made some adjustments though to win the next two three games to level the match. From there, the teams exchanged games. With Trinity up 7-6, Jung and Hauser played smart tennis to force a set tie-break. The Pioneer team was all about comebacks in their match. After finding themselves behind in the tie-break, the pair steadied up and took the tie break 7-5.

Going into singles play, Hauser cruised to an 8-0 win. The first-year stayed calm, and trusted her tennis, to outlast her opponent at the baseline and secured her team's spot in the B Draw semifinals. Jung stayed patient in her match and was creative in finding ways to disrupt play for her opponent. Jung secured the match sweep with her 8-6 win.

L. Gosghgarian and C. Goshgarian kicked off B Draw semifinal play for Smith against Julia Lendel and Emily Sivarak from Amherst. The Goshgarians got out to a quick start in doubles taking the lead. Sivarak and Lendel from Amherst adjusted their play to level the match. The match continued to stay even, but at 5-5 Amherst picked up play to close the match 8-5. In singles, the Goshgarians both battled in their matches, but Amherst was able to secure the sweep and their spot in the final.

In the other semifinal round, Hauser and Jung played a tough doubles match against a strong doubles team of Yeo and Xu from Wellesley. Yeo and Xu were dominant up at net, and even though Jung and Hauser adjusted to find ways to break their offense, the duo proved too tough for the Smith team securing the doubles point.

In singles play, Jung continued to battle to keep her and her partner in the match. Suzanne Xu was able to take the win though, going 8-2 and claiming Wellesley's spot in the final. Hauser continued to battle on her court though, looking for her third singles win of the season. Her and her partner exchanged games. In the tie-break, Yeo increased her level of play and was able to take the match.  Jung and Hauser had a great tournament as a duo, and are 3-1 overall as a doubles team.
