Springfield Rallies for NEWMAC Wins at Smith

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College softball team held leads in both games but Springfield rallied for a pair of wins in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) twinbill Friday evening. The Pride took game one 6-4 before a shortened game two due to darkness, 5-4. Smith drops to 8-14 on the year with a 1-5 mark in league play while Springfield improves to 25-3 this year and 8-0 in conference games.

Game 1 Highlights
  • Smith started the scoring in the top of the first as Taylor Ang's (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) sac fly brought home Kiera Collins-Joseph (Arlington, Va./Wakefield)
  • Springfield tied the game on Amelia DeRosa's RBI single to left
  • The Pioneers would regain the lead in the bottom of the third when Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) came around on Lucy Helms' (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) single down the right field line to make it 2-1
  • The Pride added four runs over the next three inning to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth
  • The seventh inning scoring for Smith began when Meredith Moore (Caro, Mich./Caro) scored on a ground out to second followed by Piper Corey's (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) single down the left field line which scored Ang for the final run of the game
  • Shantz went 3-for-4 in the opener

Game 2 Highlights
  • Kristen Acocella drove in a run on a double to center field to put Springfield on the board in the first
  • The Pioneers tied the game up at 1-2 in the bottom of the first when Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) scored on a wild pitch and Smith would double their lead on Cece Alaniz's groundout to second scoring Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop HS)
  • Amelia DeRosa's double drove in three runs to go ahead 4-2 in the second but Smith responded on Shantz' two RBI single
  • In the top of the fifth, Dana Serricchio double scored what proved to be the winning run as the game was called after the bottom of the fifth due to darkness
  • Osmond went 3-for-3 while Helms finished 2-for-3 at the plate
