Softball Earns Walk-Off Win Over Wheaton

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College softball team split its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series with Wheaton College this weekend. The Pioneers dropped the opener on Saturday, 11-2, before completing a 10-9 walk-off win in game two. The nightcap was called on Saturday due to lightning and completed on Sunday afternoon. Smith moves to 9-15 overall and 2-6 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton is now 17-7 on the year and 7-3 in league games.

Game 1 Highlights
  • Trailing 3-0 in the first, Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) crushed her fourth homerun of the year to make it 3-1
  • The Lyons offense exploded in the second and accounted for eight runs and an 11-1 lead
  • Smith scored its final run of the game in the fifth when Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) doubled to center, scoring Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop HS)
  • Helms (5-8) took the loss, allowing 11 runs on four hits

Game 2 Highlights
  • The Lyons held an 8-0 lead in the second before Madison Swain's (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) bases loaded fielder's choice scored Helms
  • The Pioneers would add one more in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay)
  • Another run in the third for the Lyons made it 9-2 but Smith responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 9-3
  • An RBI single for Cece Alaniz and Eli Washington's two RBI double to left made it a two run game, 9-7
  • Tied at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh, Riley Austin (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) led off with a single to left field
  • Swain bunted to third and Austin advanced to third and scored the game-winning run on a throwing error by the first baseman
  • Washington and Alaniz each went 2-for-3
