NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College softball team put on an impressive offensive performance as the Pioneers outscored Elms 27-1 in Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader. Smith (11-15) won the opener 14-1 before a 13-0 shutout in the second game. The Blazers drop to 2-22 on the year.
Game 1 Highlights
- Trailing 1-0, Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) knocked in the first two runs for Smith with a two RBI double to center to make it a 2-1 lead
- The Pioneers added three runs in the third as Smith extended their advantage to 5-1
- After Maegan Osmond's (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) RBI single scored Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors), Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) drove in three runs on her double to center, giving Smith a 9-1 edge
- Helms recorded her first career homerun in the fourth to go up 11-1 as Smith would score three more runs for the 14-1 final
- Shantz, Helms and Ang each recorded three RBI
- Helms allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout
Game 2 Highlights
- Smith jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Three consecutive hit by pitches with the bases loaded allowed for a 3-0 lead.
- Hits by Helms, Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop HS), Eli Washington and Riley Austin (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) put Smith up 10-0 before Cece Alaniz hit a three- run homer in the third inning
- Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) got the win, allowing just three hits
- Seven players recorded hits for Smith in the win

Smith will head to Worcester for a crucial NEWMAC series with WPI on Friday, April 21. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
