Softball Swept by WPI

WORCESTER - The Smith College softball team suffered a pair of one-run losses to WPI Friday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader. The host Engineers took the first game 4-3 before an 8 inning 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1 Highlights
  • Smith got on the board first from a bases loaded single by Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop HS)
  • WPI would go on to score four runs in innings three through five to take a 4-1 lead
  • The Pioneers began to rally in the sixth when Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) doubled to left field scoring Junor Shantz followed by an RBI single to right from Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) making it 4-3
  • The WPI pitcher struck out the side in the seventh inning for the final

Game 2 Highlights
  • WPI put up three runs in the first inning before RBI doubles in the fourth and fifth innings by Cece Alaniz and Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) made 3-2
  • The Engineers went ahead 4-2 in the fifth but Smith responded with RBI singles in the sixth and seventh to tie the game
  • The hosts completed the sweep on a fly ball to center field which scored the winning run from third
  • Seven different Pioneers registered hits in the loss
