Softball Drops Two at No. 24 MIT

CAMBRIDGE - Strong pitching by MIT propelled the No. 24 MIT softball team to a pair of wins over Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers suffered an 8-2 loss in the opener before falling 8-0 to the Engineers in game two.

Game 1 Highlights
  • Mikayla Cable tripled home the first MIT run of the day in the first and later came around to score on a wild pitch. The Engineers went up four with a two-run double to right in the second.
  • Smith cut the MIT lead in half in the fourth with a steal of home by Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) and an Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) single to left.
  • The Engineers responded with a three-run fifth and tacked on a final run in the sixth
  • Ang and Washington each went 2-for-3 in the opener

Game 2 Highlights
  • Haley Samuelsen singled home the first run of the day for the hosts in the second, and Mackenzie Bivin gave MIT a 3-0 lead in the third with a two-run double.
  • Samuelsen came around to score the fourth run of the day in the fourth and Jordan Sell crossed the plate on a bunt from Ladd to make it 5-0.
  • Back-to-back triples from Ava Ladd and Kennedy Adkison put MIT up seven, and Kristen Lee gave the Engineers the win with a sacrifice fly.

Smith is off until next Friday when the Pioneers travel to Clark for a NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
