Ang, Alaniz, and Shantz Homer in Split with Emerson

NORTHAMPTON - Three members of the Smith College softball team homered in a split with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Emerson College Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers took the first game by a 4-0 score, before falling in the later contest 9-4.

Game 1 Highlights
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) homered to left field, bringing CeCe Alaniz (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield) home followed by Sophia DaCosta's (Johnston, R.I./Johnston Senior) groundout that plated Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove)
  • In the fifth, Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) singles to left, allowing Riley Austin (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) to score
  • Seven different players recorded hits for Smith
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) allowed four hits with five strikeouts in the complete game shutout

Game 2 Highlights
  • The Lions opened the game with one run in the first inning followed by an eight run third inning to take a 9-0 lead
  • Smith put two on the board in the third inning as Alaniz and Helms drove in runs
  • The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Shantz and Alaniz hit back-to-back home runs to come withing 9-4
  • Smith was able to load the bases with no outs in the seventh but the Emerson pitcher got three consecutive pop outs to end the game
