Softball Suffers a Pair of Losses at Babson

BABSON PARK - Led by a dominating pitching performance by Moira O'Reilly, the Babson College softball team swept both ends of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader over Smith on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Beavers won the opener 2-0 and built a seven-run lead before holding on for a 7-5 victory in game two. The Pioneers drop to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC. 

Game 1 Highlights
  • O'Reilly took a perfect game into the top of the seventh and finished with 19 strikeouts
  • Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) got the only hit of the game for Smith
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) (5-4) allowed one run on five hits while striking out three

Game 2 Highlights
  • Babson took a 7-0 advantage into the sixth before Smith sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the inning
  • Cece Alaniz and Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) each drove in a runs to make it 7-3
  • Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) added an RBI single to right with one out in the seventh and Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) drove in Alaniz to round out the scoring
  • Helms gave up four runs as she drops to 5-5 on the year, while Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) allowed two runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of relief
