No. 11 Basketball Rolls Past Salve Regina, 71-43

NEWPORT, RI - Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) scored a game-high 16 points to lead a group of four players in double figures as No. 11 Smith College rolled past Salve Regina, 71-43, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Rodgers Recreation Center. 

The Pioneers, who are 4-0 all-time against Salve Regina, get back in the win column and improve to 15-3 on the year with a 4-1 mark in the NEWMAC. The Seahawks are now 9-10 and 3-2 NEWMAC. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Rosa made 7-of-8 from the field and added six rebounds and one block
  • Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and three assists, while Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added 11 points and seven boards. 
  • Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) finished with 10 points off the bench
  • Smith led the way in rebounds (46-38), points off turnovers (17-16), points in the paint (36-14), second-chance points (9-4), and bench scoring (23-9).
  • The Pioneers shot 48.2% (27-of-56) from the field, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range, and 61.1% (11-of-18) from the free throw line
  • Salve Regina shot 26.2% (17-of-65) from the floor, 21.1% (4-of-19) from long distance, and 55.6% (5-of-9) from the free throw line

Game Highlights
  • After a scoreless two minutes to open the game, the two teams exchanged three-point baskets from Ashley Rourke and Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy).   Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) started a 9-0 run for the visitors with her 3-pointer at 4:30 as Smith went into the second period up 17-8.
  • Smith worked a 12-0 run to take a commanding 29-11 lead after Maggie Fleming's (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove) jumper in the paint at 3:18. Salve Regina scored six of the last nine points in the period to go into halftime trailing 32-17
  • Smith scored eight unanswered points midway through the quarter to stretch the lead to 23 points on a three-pointer by Maher with 37 seconds remaining in the third. Salve Regina ended the quarter on a three-point play by Amanda Folan to make it 49-29
  • Smith went 8-for-10 in the fourth, outscoring the Seahawks 22-14 for the 71-43 final
