No. 10 Smith Picks Up Road Win at Redlands

REDLANDS, CA - The 10th-ranked Smith College basketball team held on for their first road win of the year with a 56-51 victory at University of Redlands on Friday evening.

Game Highlights
  • Smith went up 4-0 before Redlands began a 6-0 run to go ahead 2:06 into the game. The two teams exchanged buckets for the remainder of the quarter as the Bulldogs held a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.
  • Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) tied the game on a three to open the scoring in the second and again knotted the game at 20 with 5:55 on the clock on a driving layup. Smith shot 43.8% in the second quarter and took a 26-25 advantage into the break. 
  • The Pioneers started the quarter with back-to-back buckets from Martin and Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) created a 30-25 edge and the lead would grow to 38-32 after three. 
  • Ally Landau's (Livingston, NJ) layup a minute into the fourth stretched the margin to 40-32, but Redlands chipped away and got tow within three, 40-27, less than two minutes later. Tied at 46 with 1:42 remaining, Sylvester buried a jumper followed by Loo's layup and Smith went 6-of-8 from the free throw line to close out the game
Inside the Numbers
  • Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Martin added nine points, six boards, three assists, and three steals, while Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) chipped in eight points, nine rebounds, and two assists
  • Smith shot 36.1% (22-of-61) from the field, 16.7% (2-of-12) from 3-point range, and 66.7% (10-of-15) from the free throw line
  • The Pioneers finished with 34 points in the paint and forced 11 turnovers
