NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College basketball team outscored Oswego State 44-17 in the second half to defeat the Lakers 89-39 in the opening game of the Smith Holiday Classic at Ainsworth Gymnasium on Monday evening.
Smith, which is ranked No. 11 in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll, improves to 8-1 on the year. Oswego falls to 3-4 overall.
Inside the Numbers
- Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) led the way with a game-high 19 points to go with five assists, four rebounds, and four steals
- Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) shot 5-of-7 from three-point range to add 17 points, three steals, and one board
- Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) was just shy of a double-double, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds
- Jillian Nowicki (San Diego, CA/Our Lady of Peace) posted a career-high 11 points in her first collegiate game
- Smith shot 57.4% (35-of-61) from the floor, 45.5% (10-of-22) from three-point range, and 75% (9-of-12) from the free throw line
- The Pioneers outrebounded the Lakers 39-22
Game Highlights
- Landau scored the game's first four points and after a game-tying jumped by Macey Deordio, Smith embarked on a 22-7 run to close out the period. Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) came off the bench to to knock down a long ball plus a foul to put the hosts ahead 23-8 with 1:30 left and Nowicki subbed in and splashed a contested three with 32 seconds on the clock.
- Maggie Fleming (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove) and Uta Nakamura (Manhattan, NY/Long Island Lutheran) began the second with three-point plays as Smith's lead extended to 45-22 going into halftime.
- Martin knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to start the third as Smith outscored the visitors 28-8 in the period to increase their lead to 73-30 with one quarter remaining.
- Mya Williams (Temple City, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial) and Jillian Nowicki (San Diego, CA/Our Lady of Peace) combined to score 10 points in the fourth as Smith went on to defeat Oswego 89-39
