Balanced Attack Leads No. 12 Smith Past Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN - Junior Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) poured in a game-high 17 points as one of many stars for the Smith College basketball team, as the Pioneers cruised past host Williams College for a 74-54 win in non-conference play inside Chandler Gymnasium. 

Smith, which is ranked No. 12 in the latest WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, improves to 6-1 on the year. The Ephs even their record to 3-3. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Sylvester shot 7-of-9 from the field to go along with two rebounds and two steals
  • Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) tallied 16 points, five boards, five assists, and six steals
  • Jazmyn Washington (Los Angeles, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the field to chip in 13 points, while Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added 10 points
  • Smith outrebounded the Ephs 29-25 and forced 20 turnovers
  • The Pioneers shot 57.7% (30-of-52) from the field, 50% (7-of-14) from 3-point range, and 70% (7-of-10) from the free throw line
Game Highlights
  • Smith got things going early with the game's first six points on a layup by Landau and four points from Sylvester 1:55 into the contest. Williams responded and went up 18-12 with 2:48 to go as neither team scored the rest of the quarter.
  • The Pioneers opened the second stanza on an 18-2 run over six minutes to hold a 30-20 advantage before Williams knocked down a 3-pointer and Arianna Gerig scored four points to come within 30-27. The teams exchanged baskets before Washington beat the clock with a layup to give Smith a 34-29 lead. 
  • A mostly even third quarter made way for the fourh where Smith pulled away by outscoring Williams 22-10 in the final frame for the 20 point victory.
