NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College basketball team toppled Clark, 95-40, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Quarterfinals on Wednesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Smith, the No. 2 seed in the tournament is now 23-3 on the season. Clark, seeded seventh, had its season come to a close with a 15-11 record.
The Pioneers, who are appearing in a pair of national polls and is ranked as high as No. 15 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III National Coaches Poll, was paced by
Ally Yamada's (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy) 18 points on four 3-pointers.
Inside the Numbers
- Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) totaled 10 points, six assists, and three rebounds, while Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists
- Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) chipped in 11 off the bench and shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc
- Smith shot 60% (36-of-60) from the field, 59.1% (13-of-22) from three-point range, and 66.7% (10-of-15) from the free throw line
- Clark was 16-of-54 (29.6%) from the field in the game and committed 17 turnovers
Game Highlights
- A pair of free throws followed by a layup by Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) stretched Smith's lead to 14-3 with 5:48 remaining in the period. After a three-pointer by Kailey Rios made it 14-6, Smith embarked on a 15-6 run to close out the period
- A 10-1 spurt to start the second put the Pioneers ahead 39-13 with 4:06 on the clock and Clairmont closed the half with two 3-pointers in the final 1:37 for the 52-22 advantage
- The Pioneers continued to pull away in the third as Ella Sylvester's (Everett, WA/Everett) as time ran out extended Smith's lead to 72-33
- Smith shot 53.3% in the fourth quarter and outscored Clark 23-7 en route to the 95-40 win
