CAMBRIDGE - Sophomore diver
Katherine Welsh (St. Paul, MN/Saint Paul Academy) highlighted day two of competition at the 2024 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool. The sophomore diver recorded a sixth place score of 442.30 on the 1-meter board.
MIT won five of six events to increase its lead after two days of competition with 587 points. Springfield holds second place in the standings with 307 points, while United States Coast Guard Academy trails in third with 282 points. Wheaton is just 14 points behind in fourth at 268. Wellesley is in the fifth spot with 206 points, just five points ahead of sixth-place Worcester Polytechnic Institute's total of 201. Smith College (131), Mount Holyoke College (120), Babson College (114) and Clark University (112) are separated by just 19 points in the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th positions.
The Pioneers opened Friday's evening session with a 10th place finish in the 200 Free Relay of the A Final. Abby Caputo,
Bebe Cosgrove (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz),
Maddie Milla (Nyack, NY/Nyack), and
Grace Magee (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal) combined for a time of 1:34.64.
In the 500 free,
Caroline Kolmodin (Mountainside, NJ/Academy for Allied Health Sciences Union County) took 14th with a time of 5:16.44.
Smith's 400 medley relay team of
Julia Petrino (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre Global Academy),
Abby McIlraith (Portland, OR/Sunset), Abby Caputo and
Caroline Kolmodin (Mountainside, NJ/Academy for Allied Health Sciences Union County) touched the wall eighth in 4:07.31.

Competition resumes Saturday at 10:00 AM with the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, and 200 Medley Relay prelims. Saturday's Finals will take place at 6:00 PM.
