Tennis Defeats Williams Smith, 8-1

Box Score GENEVA, NY - The Smith College tennis team continued its winning ways in dual matches this season as the Pioneers earned an 8-1 win over William Smith College on Saturday. Smith improves to 3-0 in dual matches this season. 

Doubles Highlights
  • Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) teamed up for the first time in the No. 1 position. The pair played lights out, aggressive doubles taking control at net and using powerful baseline play to disrupt their opponents. The duo cruised to an 8-3 win. 
  • Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) earned the second point of the day for Smith. In a close match, the two continued to adjust tactically to keep play in their favor and to disrupt their opponents. In the set tie-break, Gibson and Wang achieved a perfect balance of steady yet aggressive play to close out the match 
  • Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) closed out doubles play. Jung and Goshgarian got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 5-2 lead against the Heron duo of Haythorr and Montague. The Herons battled back to 5-5. After exchanging games, this match was headed to the second doubles tie-break of the day. In the tie-break, Jung and Goshgarian quickly found their groove, going up 5-0. They closed out the tie-break only doping two points as they secured the doubles sweep for Smith. 

Singles highlights

  • Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) got off to a roaring start in her singles match. From the very first point, she played lights-out, offensive tennis. She cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win securing the first singles point of the day for Smith. 
  • The match was clinched in the number one position by first year, Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden). Hauser also got off to a very strong start, only dropping one game on her way to a first set win. In the second set, her opponent made some adjustments, but Hauser was able to commit to her game plan and secure the 6-1, 6-3 win. 
  • First year Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) also had a strong singles showing. Wang quickly secured the first set, winning 6-2. In the second set, her opponent, Grace Magna, got off to a strong start and put a great game together to go up 1-0. Wang stayed composed, made some adjustments and continued to stay steady under pressure to secure the 6-2, 6-4 win. 
  • Senior, Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy), played a close match in the No. 5 position. Gibson used her strong serve to set up her points and played gritty tennis to outlast her aggressive opponent, Julia Pida. Gibson earned the 7th point of the day for Smith with her 6-4, 7-5 win. 
  • Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) made her debut in the singles line-up this spring season in the number six position. Caluna played a powerful opponent who was quick to come to net. In the first set, Caluna continued to mix up play to get her opponent unsteady, but it wasn't enough, and Montague of William Smith was able to secure the set win 6-3. In the second set, Caluna got off to a strong start, playing an aggressive game dictating play. Montague proved to be too much, closing out the match and earning the lone point for the Herons. 
  • The final point of the day for Smith came from Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) in the No. 3 slot. After dropping the first set 6-0, Jung made some quick adjustments to get herself back in the match. She cruised in the second set, forcing a match tie-break. In the match tie-break, Aranne continued to show a great balance of steady yet aggressive play to close out the match 0-6, 6-2, 10-7.
