Lacrosse Drops 19-11 Decision at Western Connecticut

DANBURY, CT - Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) scored four goals but Western Connecticut State University used a strong first quarter to earn a 19-11 win over Smith College in non-conference lacrosse action at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night. 

By the Numbers
  • Arancio added an assist, while Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) finished with two goals, three draw controls and two caused turnovers
  • Isabelle Elder (Santa Rosa, CA/Sonoma Academy) totaled five ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Goalkeeper Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, NJ/Highstown) made a career-high 19 saves 
  • The hosts finished with a 38-21 advantage in shots to go along with a 23-10 edge in draw controls.
Game Highlights
  • The Wolves raced out to a 7-2 lead after the first with Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) scoring for the Pioneers
  • Western Connecticut extended the lead to 12-5 before Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) tallied her sixth goal of the year just before the half
  • Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) scored at the end of the third but the Wolves opened the fourth with four unanswered scores to go up 19-9
  • Maya Wang (Lafayette, CA/Acalanes) and Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) added two mores late in the fourth for the 19-11 final
