Smith Rallies Late for 18-14 Win at Keene State

KEENE, NH - The Smith College lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter en route to an 18-14 win over Keene State Tuesday evening at the Owl Athletic Complex. The Pioneers improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Owls suffer their first loss of the season and drop to 4-1.

By the Numbers
  • Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) led the offensive effort with five goals, while Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Caroline Sanders (Orange County, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) each scored four
  • Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) also added three ground balls, three caused turnovers, and six draw controls
  • Sadie Tscider recorded three goals and three assists
  • Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) made six saves in 37:39 of play to earn her first win of the year
  • Smith held a 29-25 advantage in shots, while the Owls owned a 20-16 edge in draw controls and 18-16 margin in groun balls
Game Highlights
  • After the teams traded goals inside the opening 10 minutes of the game, including a pair from Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), Smith would string together three strikes to open up a 5-3 advantage with 2:02 on the clock. 
  • Keene State responded and built an 11-6 edge by scoring eight of the game's nedt nine goals. 
  • Smith clawed back and cut the deficit to 12-10 at halftime
  • The two teams each scored twice in the third and Smith would go on to score six unanswered goals in the fourth period for the 18-14 vidctory.
