Coast Guard Holds Off Smith, 15-10

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College lacrosse team gave Coast Guard all they could handle in a 15-10 loss to the Bears in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMC) matchup Saturday afternoon. The Bears utilized a 7-0 run in the second half to turn an 8-8 game into 15-8. CGA then held on despite a late run by the Pioneers. Smith drops to 4-7 on the year with a 1-3 mark in the NEWMAC. The Bears improve to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in conference. 

By the Numbers
  • Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) finished with four goals, one assist, four ground balls and two draw controls
  • Caroline Sanders (Orange County, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) added a goal and assist to go along with eight draw controls and two caused turnovers
  • Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, NJ/Highstown) made six saves between the pipes for Smith
  • Smith had a 32-25 advantage in shots 
Game Highlights
  • Smith got on the board when Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) set up Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) for a 1-0 lead early in the first
  • Coast Guard responded and scored six consecutive goals to close out the opening period with a 6-1 advantage
  • Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) went back-to-back before Abby McAllister scored two of her own for an 8-3 Coast Guard lead
  • Smith added three to close out the half to pull within two, 8-6, and opened the third period with two straight goals by Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) to tie the game
  • From that point, Coast Guard went on a seven goal surge which extended their lead to 15-8 with 8:36 left in the fourth
  • Smith was unable to capitalize on free position attempts ant went scoreless throughout the fourth period until scoring two more with under 1:30 left in the game for the 15-10 final
