AMHERST - Sophomore
Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Smith College softball team to a sweep over Amherst College on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers earned a 5-0 win in the opener and edged out the Mammoths, 1-0, in game two.
Smith improves to 10-7-1 on the year, while Amherst drops to 5-14 overall.
Game 1: Smith 5 Amherst 0
- Doty struck out six and walked three to improve to 6-3 on the year. She gave up the lone hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs
- Amherst pitcher Dani Torres Werra threw three shutout innings but gave up two runs in the fourth. Cece Alaniz singles to bring home Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) and Lucy Allen's (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) sac fly plated Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors)
- The Pioneers added a run in the fifth and Shantz ripped her second homerun of the year to bring the score to 5-0.
Game 2: Smith 1 Amherst 0
- The scoreless pitcher's dual lasted through the sixth innings until Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop) doubled to left field scoring Lucy Helms (Alameda, CA/Alameda) for the only run of the game
- Alaniz added a hit in the fourth for the Pioneers
- Helms pitched the complete game shutout with two strikeouts and one walk
