BOSTON - The Smith College softball team generated 20 hits in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) sweep at Emerson Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 12-7-1 on the year with a 4-2 mark in the NEWMAC. The Lions fall to 11-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
Game 1: Smith 5 Emerson 2
- Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) started for Smith, giving up two runs and eight hits through seven innings while sending down seven and walking one. Her record improves to 7-3.
- Emerson opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run, her second of the season. Smith would take the lead after a five-run third inning. Two scored from a pair of sac flies, and a single to left drove in one more. A two-run home run by CeCe Alaniz (Bakersfield, CA/East Bakersfield) made the score 5-1.
- Emerson made the score 5-2 in the sixth inning, as Sam Zannotti scored after Makenzie Killough hit into a fielder's choice.Smith claimed the win after Doty shut out the Lions in the seventh inning.
Game 2: Smith 8 Emerson 0
- Helms allowed no runs and five hits to go with three strikeouts and a walk to move to 2-3 on the year.
- Smith took an early 2-0 lead after Alaniz drove in two on a single in the first inning. The visitors scored again in the fourth after Sheehan walked in a run and Alaniz hit another two-run single.
- Helms hit her first home run of the season to extend Smith's lead to 6-0. Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) later drove two more in with a single to left.
- Emerson was unable to score in the bottom half, leading to the game being called due to mercy rule.
- Alaniz finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI

Smith returns to action tomorrow when the Pioneers host Babson beginning at 11:00am.
