Smith Offense Overpowers Keene State in Doubleheader Sweep

KEENE, NH - The Smith College softball team earned a two-game sweep over Keene State College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. Smith's offense combined for 19 runs on 25 hits as they won the opener 13-0 in five innings, before defeating the Owls 6-1 in the nightcap. Smith improves to 15-8-1 on the year, while Keene State dips to 4-21. 

Game 1: Smith 13 KSC 0 (5 Innings)
  • Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) earned the win (8-4) after allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in the shutout
  • For Smith, 10 difference players recorded hits powered by Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) who went 3-for-4 with three RBI
  • Kat Wajerski (Bellevue, WA/Newport), Kaitlen Beals (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty), and Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop) all finished with with two RBI
  • Lexi Balam's (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop) single up the middle in the second two runs and Smith would add six more runs in the fourth
  • The Pinoeers added five more runs in the fifth starting with Wajerski's double to left center. Wajerski came around to score on Shantz's double and Beals added two RBI on her double to right
Game 2: Smith 6 KSC 1
  • 10 players recorded hits for Smith as Shantz went 3-for-4 with a homerun 
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, CA/Alameda) earned the win after giving up four hits with one run and three strikeouts
  • Leading 3-0 in the first, Molly Takea got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which scored Madison Swain (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley)
  • The Pioneers took advantage of some pitching miscues to go up 6-0 after two innings. 
  • Keene State added a run in the sixth for the 6-1 final
