NORTHAMPTON - A multi-homer day from
Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) and 12 total hits highlighted Friday's action, but WPI took both games from Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader, winning 5-3 and 10-2. The Pioneers drop to 15-10-1 on the year with a 5-5 mark in conference play. The Engineers are now 13-12-1 overall and 6-1 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Smith 3 WPI 5
- Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) (8-5) took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts
- Taz Tamai (Cincinatti, OH/The Seven Hills School) went 2-for-3 with two RBI
- The Engineers totaled six stolen bases in the opener
- Trailing 1-0, Tamai singled up the middle to plate Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) and Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) to take the lead
- The Engineers tied it in the fourth and got two runs in the fifth on back-to-back fly balls to the outfield
- Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Shantz put a run on the board with a leadoff homer to deep center but the WPI pitcher retired the next six batters for the win
Game 2: Smith 2 WPI 10 (6 Innings)
- Lucy Helms (Alameda, CA/Alameda) (3-4) and Gray combined to allow 10 runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work
- Shantz, Tamai and CeCe Alaniz (Bakersfield, CA/East Bakersfield) all wnt 2-for-3 in the nightcap
- WPI wasted no time as Meg Sherwood roped an RBI double to right. The Engineers took advantage of three errors by the Smith defense in the third to go up 5-0.
- Riley O'Brien started the fifth with a leadoff homer to left field, before Shantz knocked her sixth homerun of the year in the bottom of the fifth making it 6-1
- WPI extended the lead to 10-1 in the sixth before Smith added their final run of the game when Gray scored on a fielder's choice
