NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College softball team generated 23 hits but it was not enough to overcome MIT's powerful offense in a NEWMAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon on senior Day. MIT took game one 5-1 before a 13-7 decision in game two.
Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) collected six hits and now has 49 on the season.
Smith is now 19-14-1 overall and 9-7 in league play, while the Engineers improve to 21-9, 11-5.
Game 1: Smith 1 MIT 5
- The game was scoreless until Taz Tamai (Cincinatti, OH/The Seven Hills School) recorded her first career homerun in the third
- MIT responded with three runs in the fourth and added another two in the fifth
- Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts
- Tamai, Shantz, and Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) collected multiple hits for the Pioneers
Game 2: Smith 7 MIT 13
- With the game tied at 2-2, MIT generated seven runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 9-2
- Smith rallied with a run in the fourth followed by four more in the fifth to come within 9-7 before MIT tagged Smith for four runs in the final two innings
- Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI
- Allen and Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop) each finished with two hits
- Lucy Helms (Alameda, CA/Alameda) shouldered the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits
