Northampton, MA. -Â Smith College's volleyball team pulled off an exciting upset over #18 Wesleyan University with a 3-2 victory, followed by another win against Bates (3-1), during the final day of the 3rd Annual Bonnie May Invitational.
Highlights
- The first match of the day featured Smith taking on the Wesleyan Cardinals.
- The first set of the evening started off with a back and forth score with Smith starting with an early 9-6 lead.
- Wesleyan and Smith would go back and forth with Smith taking a 16-11 lead.
- Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) led the charge in the first set with four kills in the first nine points for Smith.
- Smith would win the first set 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead. The second and third set were point for point the entire set, however, Wesleyan would pull out victorious in both sets to take a 2-1 lead.
- Smith would continue to fight for a fifth set, not allowing Wesleyan back in, as a four point run at the beginning of the set from Sarah Dankovich (El Paso, TX/Coronado) pushed them near a fifth set. A three point service run by Claudia Poehlmann (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) would push them over the top and into a fifth set, as Smith won the fourth set by a score of 25-23.
- In the fifth set, Smith and Wesleyan would go toe-toe as it was back and forth the whole time, with Smith coming out victorious 15-13.
- Olivia Smith (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais) would build a lead in the fifth set with a three point service run, but the Cardinals stayed in and pushed Smith to the end.
- Despite coming off a fifth set match the game before Smith would come out dominant in their second match against Bates. T
- he first set went in the direction of the home team as Smith won 25-19.
- Addison Klunder (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) led the charge in the second game with a team leading 20 kills, a new career high.
- The visitors would fight back however, as they took the second set, 25-15.
- Smith would turn it back up for the third and fourth set as they shut the door on the Bobcats.
- Taylor Gwynne (Chapel HIll, NC/Carrborro) led the team with 40 assists throughout the match as Smith continues its best start in program history with a 10-1 record.Â

- Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) and Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) combined for 40 kills in the Wesleyan match, while Mia Etheridge (Half Moon Bay, CA/Half Moon Bay) contributed 14 kills.
- Addison Klunder's (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) new career high of 20 kills was a standout performance in the Bates match.
