Smith Sweeps UMASS-Boston on Saturday Afternoon

Northampton, MA – The Smith College volleyball team dominated UMass-Boston in a 3-0 sweep on a Saturday afternoon in Ainsworth Gymnasium.

Highlights

  • The first set of the afternoon saw Smith take on UMass-Boston. Smith started off strong, building an early 7-3 lead. The Beacons would close the gap, but a series of kills from Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) and Addison Klunder (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) pushed Smith ahead 16-11.
  • Smith would win the first set 25-21, with Mia Etheridge (Half Moon Bay, CA/Half Moon Bay) leading the charge defensively and contributing key kills, helping her team secure the 1-0 lead.
  • In the second set, the teams traded points early, but a run of errors from UMass-Boston allowed Smith to pull ahead. Taylor Gwynne (Chapel HIll, NC/Carrborro) orchestrated the offense with 35 assists, finding both Sweeney and Klunder for several key points. Smith took the second set 25-18.
  • The third set continued the trend of back-and-forth play, with UMass-Boston keeping it close, but another strong service run from Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, MN/South High Minneapolis) and the Pioneers' blocking up front shut down any comeback attempts. Smith sealed the match with a 25-21 victory in the final set.

  • Addison Klunder (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) led the way with 14 kills on 24 swings, hitting .500 for the match.
  • Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) added 13 kills, while Taylor Gwynne (Chapel HIll, NC/Carrborro) delivered 35 assists and 8 digs.
  • Mia Etheridge (Half Moon Bay, CA/Half Moon Bay) and Miranda Oakes (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University) each contributed defensively, with Etheridge leading in digs and Oakes recording two blocks
