Smith Tennis Upsets Middlebury in Doubles, Dominates Weekend Matches

Northampton, MA - The Smith Tennis team started off the season with a strong performance at Vassar Scramble last weekend. Highlights included an upset win in doubles over #8 Middlebury. 
  • Smith had some strong showings in doubles to start the weekend. 
  • Smith started the day with Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) earning an upset 7-5 win over Claudia Miller and Elsie Van Wieren of #8 Middlebury. 
  • Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) followed up this win with a strong 6-4 win over Hannah Apsey and Stephanie Pratt from Hamilton College.  
  • In singles action, Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) took on Vassar's Erin McCusker who finished the 2023-2024 season ranked #26 in the country. After going down 3-0 in the set, Hauser battled back to take the set 6-4. 
  • On Sunday, Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) continued their winning streak earning another  6-4 win over Hamilton. 
  • In more doubles action, first year Natazya Simunyola and junior Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) took on Sahana Raman and Nina Farhat of Middlebury. The two battled hard, but couldn't quite stop Middlebury from closing out the match 6-4. 
  • As a team, Smith had an outstanding showing against SUNY New Paltz. winning 11 of 13 matches including first collegiate wins for all Smith's first years Natazya Simunyola, Alexa Konstantopoulos (Waltham, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols), and Tabitha Bastress (Charlotte, VT/Champlain Valley Union High School)
Smith returns to action this weekend at they travel to Brunswick, ME for the ITA Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships are being hosted by Bowdoin College.
