Strong Performances and Hard-Fought Battles at ITA Regionals for Smith Tennis

September 22, 2024

Brunswick, ME - The Smith Tennis team continued their season with a strong performance at ITA Regionals last weekend. Highlights included a win from Alya Hauser over NESCAC foe Williams.
  • Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) got off to a strong start at the ITA Regionals. The duo dominated their opening match, defeating Payton Dugan and Elise Hogan from Colby-Sawyer with ease, dropping only two games.
  • In their next round, the Goshgarians faced the #7-seeded pair from Wesleyan. The Smith duo took an early 2-0 lead, but the Wesleyan team made key adjustments, eventually winning the match and later going on to be crowned ITA Doubles tournament champions.
  • In singles action, Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) faced a challenging first-round match against #7-seed Melanie Woodbury of Tufts. After a difficult first set, losing 6-0, Hauser found her rhythm in the second, dictating the pace and leading for much of the set. However, Woodbury forced a tiebreak and ultimately secured a 6-0, 7-6 victory.
  • On Friday, Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) put up a strong fight against Zoe Sun of Bowdoin. Sun quickly raced to a 4-0 lead, but Sauber adjusted her game and started to control the play. Despite her efforts, the early deficit was too much to overcome, and Sun won the match 8-4 before advancing to the semi-finals.
  • In backdraw action, Natazya Simunyola claimed a victory on Saturday against Ally Francis of Trinity. Despite not being at her best, Simunyola remained mentally tough and tactically sharp, winning the match 8-4.
  • Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) also bounced back in the backdraw on Saturday with a dominant performance against Mia Roets of Williams, securing an 8-2 win and demonstrating her resilience.
Smith was awarded the ITA Regional Sportsmanship Award for showing exemplary sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Smith returns to action this weekend at they host Hamilton College at 2pm on Saturday afternoon.
