NORTHAMPTON - Behind a 47-point second half, the No. 7 ranked Smith College basketball team defeated Wheaton College 83-37 on Saturday afternoon inside Ainsworth Gymnasium.
The Pioneers move to 15-1 and 3-0 in conference with the win, while the Lyons are now 5-12 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.
By the Numbers
- Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) scored 21 points with six rebounds, one block and one steal
- Uta Nakamura (Manhattan, NY/Long Island Lutheran) contributed 10 points and four rebounds off the bench
- Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) added eight points and five rebounds, while Jazmyn Washington (Los Angeles, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) grabbed a game-high seven boards.
- Smith shot 48.5% (32-of-66) from the floor, 38.9% (7-of-18) from three-point range and 60% (12-of-20) from the free throw line.
Game Highlights
- A game in which Smith never trailed, the Pioneers raced out to a 14-0 lead, led by six points off the bench from Nakamura. Landau's three-pointer put Smith ahead 17-1 before a jumper by Wheaton to end the period.
- A steal by Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) allowed Nakamura to convert a fastbreak layup with 39 seconds left in the half, giving Smith a 36-15 edge with 39 seconds remaining in the quarter.
- Smith outscored the visitors 24-5 in the third period and 47-21 in the second half to cruise to victory.
