CLINTON, NY - The Smith College basketball team outscored Hamilton 48-21and held the Continentals to 6-of-27 shooting in the second half Tuesday en route to a 69-41 victory.
The ninth-ranked Pioneers improve to 11-1 on the year. Hamilton falls to 11-3.
Inside the Numbers
- Virginiga Johnson scored a season-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting with three 3-pointers and grabbed seven boards
- Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and five assists
- Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added 12 points, two rebounds, and two steals
- Smith shot 47.5% (28-of-59) from the floor, 62.5% (5-of-8) from long distance, and 57.1% (8-of-14) from the free throw line
- The Pioneers owned advantages in points in the paint (42-20) and rebounds (44-31)
Game Highlights
- Hamilton held a 7-6 edge before both teams went scoreless for over three minutes until Landau and Johnson scored on consecutive possessions to put Smith up 11-7 after one.
- Smith's offense continued to struggle and Hamilton scored four points to the tie the game at 11-11 with 8:16 left in the period. The two teams went back and forth throughout the second and Smith would hold a 21-20 edge going into the second-half
- After a layup by Hannah Bernstein to put Hamilton ahead 24-23, the Pioneers responded with a 19-4 run over the final 7:05 for a 42-28 lead after three. Martin led the way with six points and Johnson drained a three-pointer at the buzzer
- Smith continued to build its advantage, outscoring Hamilton 27-13 in the final stanza to secure the 69-41 triumph
