Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored two goals and added an assist as the Smith College field hockey team came alive in the second half to earn a 4-1 win at Clark University Saturday afternoon. The Bears improve to 7-4 on the year with a 2-1 NEWMAC record. The Cougars dip to 8-3, 0-3 NEWMAC.
First Half Highlights
- Smith opened the first quarter with assertive offensive efforts, reflected in multiple early shots and a penalty corner by Day at 5:58. Despite several attempts, including shots by Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) and Grace Irizarry (Pennington, NJ/The Pennington School), it was Day who broke through at 7:30, netting the first goal of the game and putting the Bears ahead. Clark responded with pressure of their own, capitalizing on a penalty corner late in the quarter. Jenna Beauchain scored, with an assist from Alison Kopec, leveling the score at 1-1. The quarter concluded with the teams locked in a tie.
- The Bears maintained an aggressive offensive stance in the second quarter, creating several scoring opportunities. Early in the period, Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) made a crucial save against a shot from Carys Mitchell, setting a defensive tone. Despite the pressure from the Bears' forwards, Clark's defense held firm. Park continued to be a key player, making another significant save against Katelyn Towne. Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford) also had a notable attempt, but it was stopped by Reiter. The quarter closed with the score still level at 1-1, as neither team managed to break the deadlock.
Second Half Highlights
- Bosket's early shot was saved, but the Bears maintained pressure with multiple penalty corners. Day capitalized on this pressure, scoring a goal at 36:44 to give them a 2-1 lead. As the quarter progressed, the Bears' defense blocked several attempts by Clark, keeping the opponents at bay. Halie Yung (San Jose, CA/Lynbrook) extended the Smith's lead with a goal at 45:00, assisted by Day. The quarter ended with the Bears leading 3-1.
- Smith initiated a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter, with Park making key saves, including a notable stop against Morgan Brown at the 46:56 mark. Clark applied pressure early, but the Bears' defense held firm, blocking shots and forcing wide attempts, particularly from E. Cacciapaglia and Alison Kopec. The Bears' offense capitalized later in the quarter. Peterson netted a goal off an assist from Sam Sparling (Croton on Hudson, NY/Croton Harmon) at 57:14, extending their lead.
