No. 6 Basketball Falls to Tufts, 60-50

Box Score NORTHAMPTON - A slow start doomed the sixth-ranked Smith basketball team as it suffered a 60-50 setback to Tufts University Tuesday evening inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. Smith is now 19-2 on the year, while the Jumbos improve to 15-8. 

By the Numbers
  • Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) netted a career-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds
  • Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) added 18 points, three boards, two assists and two steals
  • Smith struggled shooting from the floor, finishing 15-of-45 from the field, 3-of-12 from three-point range, and 17-of-22 from the free throw line
  • Tufts outrebounded the Pioneers 35-24
How it Happened
  • The Jumbos jumped out to a 15-4 lead on a three-pointer by Sofia Gonzalez as Smith shot just 2-of-9 from the floor in the period. Monet Witherspoon beat the buzzer with a jumper to make it 17-5 after the first
  • Both teams struggled to get going in the second with Smith outscoring Tufts 7-2 in the period to trail 19-12 at the half
  • Smith began to chip away at the lead and got to within one (22-21) on a pair of free throw by Loo at the 6:33 mark. Sylvester tied the game at 26, but Tufts went ahead 41-36 going into the final period
  • Annika Decker buried a three for the visitors to start the quarter and the lead grew to 10 throughout the fourth
