NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College basketball team defeated MIT 77-38 in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. The Pioneers improve to 21-2 overall and 9-0 in the NEWMAC. The Engineers dip to 10-13 on the year with a 6-3 record in conference play.
Top Performers
- Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) led all scorers with 19 points for her 18th game in double-figures this season. She also added seven assists and four rebounds.
- Maggie Fleming (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove) added 13 points and four rebounds off the bench
- Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) each chipped in 11 points
By the Numbers
- Smith shot 55.6% (30-of-54) from the floor, 50% (8-of-16) from three-point range, and 64.3% (9-of-14) from the free throw line
- The Engineers went 22.4% (13-of-58) from the field, 15% (3-of-20) from long distance, and 47.4% (9-of-19) from the charity stripe
- Smith held a commanding 43-27 advantage on the boards and scored 40 points in the paint

- Landau drained a three-pointer followed by jumper at the 4:00 minute mark to go ahead 13-7. MIT's Kaya Weiser got the Engineers within 16-11 on a three-pointer with 38 seconds left in the quarter
- The visitors scored the first three points of the second before an 11-2 run capped by a Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) trey Smith put the Pioneers up 27-16 with 5:00 left in the half. Fleming scored the final four points of the period to give Smith a 36-21 lead at the break
- Smith's offense caught fire in the third, outscoring the Engineers 27-7, while connecting on 10-of-13 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point range to go ahead 63-28 at the end of the period
- Maya Williams grabbed an offensive rebounds and beat the buzzer as the Pioneers went on to win by a final score of 77-38
