No. 9 Basketball Clinches NEWMAC Regular Season Title With Win Over Emerson

Box Score NORTHAMPTON - The No. 9 nationally ranked Smith College basketball team clinched the NEWMAC regular season titles as they defeated Emerson College in a conference matchup by a final score of 69-51 in Ainsworth Gymnasium Wednesday evening. 

The Pioneers improve to 22-2 on the year with a 10-0 mark in the NEWMAC. The Lions fall to 16-8 on the year with a 7-3 NEWMAC record. 



Top Performers
  • Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) poured in a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds
  • Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists
  • Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) chipped in eight points, six assists, four rebounds, three blocks, and three steals, while Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) pulled down 13 boards
  • Smith limited the NEWMACs leading scorer Bri Frongillo to just 13 points
By the Numbers
  • Smith shot 34.3% (24-of-70) from the field, 20% (4-of-20) from three-point range, and 68% (17-of-25) from the free throw line
  • Emerson went 31%  (18-of-58) from the field, 31.6% (6-of-19) from three-point range, and 60% from the free throw line
  • Smith owned a 52-30 advantage on the boards

  • Landau put Smith ahead 10-3 on a three-pointer at the 6:57 mark, but the Lions clawed back and took an 18-17 lead into the second
  • Smith held its largest lead of the period at 33-27 with 21 seconds remaining before Kendra Dodd drilled a 3-pointer with four seconds left in the half
  • Smith controlled the third and started to pull away late, going ahead 47-38
  • The Pioneers went up by as much as 20 points, outscoring the visitors 22-13 in the period
