WORCESTER - The Smith College swimming and diving team opened the four-day NEWMAC Championship on Thursday with 40 points during the 800-yard freestyle relay at WPI's Sport and Recreation Center. Leading the way after night one is MIT who won the event with 70 points, while Wheaton is in second place (60 points). Smith sits in seventh entering day two of competition.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Smith's "A" team of Jessie Wang (Princeton, NJ/Princeton), Maddie Milla (Nyack, NY/Nyack), Cady Dorrian (Jacksonville, FL/Douglas Anderson School of the Arts), and Emma Schultz (Hyattsville, MD/Elizabeth Seton) posted a seventh-place time of 7:59.52 earning 32 points. The 800 freestyle relay time was the third fastest in program history.
- The "B" quartet of Carla Zeppettella (Centerville, OH/Centerville), Abby Dease (Hillsborough, NC/Orange), Parv Bonyadlou (Williamsburg, VA/Warhill), and Grace Magee (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal) finished with a time of 8:28.54 to earn eight points for Smith.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday with preliminaries starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by diving at 2:00 p.m. and the finals in the evening.
