WORCESTER - The Smith College swimming and diving team finished strong on the final night of the NEWMAC Championship, breaking the school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Pioneers concluded the four-day championship event in eighth place out of 10 teams.
MIT claimed their 14th-consecutive title as the Engineers racked up 1,678 points. Coast Guard finished with runner-up honors, collecting 750 points, while Wheaton took third with 677 points. Springfield finished fourth with 636 team points, followed by WPI (454) and Wellesley (435). Babson (416), Smith (342), Mount Holyoke (183.5) and Clark (180.5) rounded out the field.
Meet Highlights
- Grace Magee (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal) swam to 13th in the 1,650 free (18:48.73)
- Jessie Wang (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) represented the Pioneers in the A Final of the 200 back, recording an eighth place time of 2:07.85
- In the 100 free, Madeleine Lucas (Salem, MA/Salem) touched the wall 13th in 53.41, while Ruthie Harkins (Irvine, CA/Crean Lutheran South) placed 17th in the 200 butterfly (2:17.50)
- Emma Schultz (Hyattsville, MD/Elizabeth Seton) delivered a seventh place performance in the 200 breast, clocking in at 2:28.35
- Katherine Welsh's (St. Paul, MN/Saint Paul Academy) score of 443.65 on the 3-meter was good for fifth place
- The quartet of Lucas, Maddie Milla (Nyack, NY/Nyack), Wang, and Caroline Kolmodin (Mountainside, NJ/Academy for Allied Health Sciences Union County) combined for a time of 3:36.70. The time eclipsed the previous school record mark of 3:38.09 set in 2017.
