No. 6 Smith Tops Coast Guard, 89-60

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College basketball team prevailed over Coast Guard, 89-60, in NEWMAC competition on Wednesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium. 

Smith, who is ranked No. 6 in the lates Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III National Coaches Poll, earned its 18th win of the season and remains the only undefeated team in conference play at 6-0. Coast Guard falls to 14-6, 3-3. 



By the Numbers
  • Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) led all scorers with 18 points, five assists, and four rebounds
  • Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) finished with 12 points, six boards, and three steals, while  Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) chipped in 11 points, five boards, and four assists
  • Jazmyn Washington (Los Angeles, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) produced 10 points and seven boards
  • Smith shot 55% (33-of-60) from the floor, 44.4% (8-of-18) from three-point range, and 78.9% (15-of-19) from the free throw line
  • The Pioneers held a 32-24 edge in rebounds and received 29 points from the bench
Game Highlights
  • After going up 11-4 midway through the first, Smith embarked on a 15-0 run in a span of 3:28 to hold a 26-6 lead. Landau's bucket with 13 seconds put Smith ahead 28-8 going into the second. 
  • Coast Guard was able to trim the Smith lead down to 15 with 3:50 left in the second as a jumper by Kelly Hagerty made it 35-20. However, Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) scored a quick five points in 22 seconds to push the lead back to 20 and Smith went into the break up 50-26. 
  • The Bears outscored Smith 15-14 in the third, but Smith increased it advantage to 35 on a layup by Samara Ashooh (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) with under two minutes to play.

Smith travels to Clark University on Saturday, February 8. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm.
