SPRINGFIELD - The Smith College lacrosse team outscored Western New England University 8-3 after the first quarter en route to a 12-10 victory over the Golden Bears Saturday afternoon.
Smith picks up its first win of the year to improve to 1-1, while WNEU dipped to 0-2.
Top Performers
- Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) finished with three goals and four assists
- Caroline Sanders (Orange County, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) added a hat trick to go along with three ground balls and two draw controls
- Sienna Ferrucci and Darci DeAngelis (Boise, ID/Boise) each recorded three ground balls
- In net, Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, NJ/Highstown) earned the win, making six saves in 45 minutes of action
Game Highlights
- The Golden Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Sanders put Smith on the board with an unassisted tally at the 8:26 mark.
- After Ella Henry found the back of the net for WNEU, Fitzgerald and Jenna Paczkowski (Jupiter, FL/Choate Rosemary Hall) went back-to-back for Smith to come withing a goal
- WNEU took a 7-4 lead into the second period where Smith got scores from Jordan Hoffman (Portland, OR/Jesuit), Tschider, and Fitzgerald to trail 8-7
- In the third, the Pioneers took their first lead of the game when Kyra Hawk (San Jose, CA/The Harker School) converted a pass from Tschider
- The Golden Bears went up 10-9 early in the fourth, but Smith scored three unanswered goals in the final six minutes of the game to secure the win
