Smith Softball Drops Two in Florida Doubleheader

CLERMONT, FL. – The Smith College softball team faced a tough day on the field, falling to Wesleyan (Conn.) and Bowdoin in a pair of contests at Hancock Park on Monday morning.

Game 1: Wesleyan 10, Smith 0 (5 innings)

The Pioneers struggled to generate offense against an undefeated Wesleyan squad, managing just one hit in a 10-0 setback. The Cardinals jumped ahead early with a run in the second inning before breaking the game open with three runs in the third and six more in the fourth.

  • Pitching: Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) (3.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 K) took the loss, while A. Lavery came in for relief.
  • Offense: Kat Wajerski (Bellevue, WA/Newport) recorded Smith's only hit of the game.
  • Defense: The Pioneers committed two errors, while Wesleyan played cleanly.

Game 2: Bowdoin 3, Smith 1

Smith bounced back with a stronger defensive effort in game two but was unable to generate enough offense to overcome Bowdoin. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and came around to score on a clutch two-out RBI single from Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston).

Bowdoin responded with a solo home run in the third to tie the game and took the lead with another long ball in the fourth. Smith kept it close, but the Polar Bears tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to seal the win.

  • Pitching: Smith's staff allowed just three runs on eight hits in seven innings.
  • Offense: The Pioneers were limited to two hits, including Allen's RBI single.
  • Key Moment: Bowdoin's solo home runs in the third and fourth innings proved to be the difference.

Smith (1-4) will look to regroup as they continue their Florida trip. Up next, the Pioneers take on SUNY-Cortland and Nazereth University on Tuesday afternoon.
