Final Four Preview: Smith Heads to Salem for Final Four

SALEM, VA - The Smith College basketball team returns to familiar territory in the 2025 NCAA Division III Tournament, as Smith knocked off the number one overall seed Bowdoin and #5 Gustavus Adolphus to advance to the Final Four this weekend. Smith has been to the Final Four each of the last two years, advancing to the National Championship last year. The No. 8 Pioneers (28-2) will take on No. 11 OW-Oshkosh Titans in the Final Four on Thursday evening. This is a rematch of last year's year Sweet 16 game which saw Smith come out victorious and advance to the Elite 8 to face Bowdoin last year. Complete Final Four and coverage is available below.

Team Previews

Smith College Pioneers (30-2)

  • The Pioneers, currently ranked No. 8 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, come into the weekend strong after beating the top seeded Bowdoin College on their home court. 
  • They followed up the win over Bowdoin with a win over #5 Gustavus Adolphus to advance to Final Four. 
  • This is the third consecutive year Smith has advanced to the Final Four, and it is the first time a team, has done is since Amherst College did so from 2016-18.  
  • Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) led the way with 22 points as Smith upended Gustavus to advance to the Final Four. 
  • Three members of the Smith basketball team earned All-Conference honors in Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) (1st Team), Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover)  (1st Team), and Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) (2nd Team)
  • Landau leads Smith in scoring (14.6 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg), assists (101), steals (69) and blocks (23) as well as had 23 games in double figure scoring. 
  • Smith ranks No. 6 in the NCAA Division III in field goal percentage (46.12%), fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (36.4%), and eighth in scoring defense (48.4 ppg).
  • Smith has posted three straight 30-win seasons for the first time in program history and are making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tourney. 
New York University Violets (29-0)
  • This is the second year in a row that NYU is advancing to the Final Four. They beat Gettysburg on their home court to advance to Salem.  
  • Natalie Bruns is leading the way for the Violets as she is averaging 17.2 points per game, while also averaging 6.2 rebounds per game.
  • This is head coach Meg Barber's 6th season at NYU with an overall record of 148-21 while in charge of the Violets. 
  • NYU faces off against UW-Stout in the first game at 5:00pm EST. 

UW-Oshkosh Titans (27-4) 
  • This will match the furthest a UW-Oshkosh Women's Basketball team has made it as they made it back in 1996 where they ended up losing to NYU in the Final Four. 
  • The Titans took down Baldwin Wallace in the Elite 8 to advance to this point and were led by Sammi Beyer's 18 points 
  • UW-Oshkosh and Smith are no strangers to each other as they faced off last year in the Sweet 16 up in Brunswick, ME which saw Smith come out victorious. 
  • This is head coach Brad Fischer's 13th year in charge with an overall record of 287-75. 
UW-Stout (23-7) 
  • The UW-Stout Blue Devils are heading to the Final Four for the first time in program history after a thrilling 81-77 victory over No. 5-ranked Scranton in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Elite Eight.
  • Raegan Sorenson led the way for the Blue Devils as she dropped 33 points in the game to advance. 
  • They will face off against the reigning champions NYU at 5:00pm EST. The Blue Devils are fifth in the nation in field goal percentage (46.3).
  • They are led by Hannah Iverson who is in her seventh season as head coach of the Blue Devils
